Safer Internet Day

Posted on: 05 Feb 24

We are delighted to support this year’s Safer Internet Day, taking place on Tuesday 6th February.

Run by UK Safer Internet Centre, Safer Internet Day has grown significantly in the past 20 years and is today celebrated in around 170 countries globally.

What Is Safer Internet Day?

Designed to encourage conversations about the life matters and issues online that are facing young people, Safer Internet Day is celebrated around the world every February.

It is the UK’s biggest celebration of online safety. Every year, a different online issue or theme is chosen that young people are seeing and experiencing online, to find ways to promote the positive use of digital technology.

Created in consultation with young people across the UK, this year is focusing on change online and is based on the theme “Inspiring change? Making a difference, managing influence and navigating change online”.

What Happens On Safer Internet Day?

On Safer Internet Day, thousands of organisations join in to promote the safe, positive and responsible use of digital technology for children and young people.

The emphasis this year is on change online, and, in particular, on gathering young people’s views on new and upcoming technology and ways we can use the internet to make change for the better. There will be a focus on finding the changes young people want to see online and the things that can influence and change the way young people think, feel and behave online as well as offline.

How Can You Stay Safe Online?

It’s important that everyone is able to stay safe online and we have a few key tips to help you stay safe when you’re using the internet:

  • Use strong passwords and store them somewhere safe
  • Don’t share personal information online
  • Make sure you only click on links you trust
  • Be careful with any photos you post online to ensure no personal information such as house number or car registration details is in the background
  • Remember: if something seems too good to be true, it probably is
